Mary Ann Maria Walters was born in the parish of Epsom in Surrey, the daughter of Francis Walters and Mary. She had two full siblings: James Francis Walters, who migrated to Wales for work in the mining industry before joining the Mormon church and immigrating to the Territory of Utah, USA in 1864, and Eleanor Walters, who married James Brewer and stayed in Mortlake and surrounding areas her entire life. I could find no trace of her father Francis Walters after Eleanor Walters’s baptism in Epsom, Surrey on 15 Feb 1824,1and very little information about him in general. I did find records records matching his details in the British Army Regimental Registers of Canada.2,3 Francis Waters [Walters] was from Epsom. At 18, he stood 5 feet 4 inches tall, with pale skin and grey eyes. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd Battalion of the 12th Foot. The title of the record set referenced is a tad misleading. He never went to Canada, as the 2nd Battalion served in England and Ireland from 1812-1819. The timing works out for this to be him, as his service expired on 3 May 1819, and Mary Ann Maria Walters was born in 1820.
Mary Ann Maria Walters’s mother Mary married a man named William Greening on 26 Oct 1824. They had five children in Mortlake: William Richard Greening (1827-1881), Elizabeth Greening (1830-1839), Richard Greening (1833-1834), Henry Greening (1835-1837) and Maria Greening (1838-1838). In this 1824 marriage record she was listed as a spinster and her surname Price.4 I am not sure if Price was her maiden name and she and Francis Walters never actually married, or if she had had another husband with the last name Price between Francis Walters and William Greening. That would be a lot of husbands in a short period of time, so I am leaning toward the former explanation.

Tragically, Richard, Henry and Maria Greening all died as infants. There was a coroner’s inquest for Henry Greening’s death but I do not think the records survive. Elizabeth Greening made it to age ten before she died in May of 1839.17 This was two months before the birth of Thomas Ward and Mary Walters’s first child was born on 13 Jul 1839.25 They named her Elizabeth. The Greening children were all buried here in the Mortlake Churchyard in unmarked graves. Space was limited, and tombstones with a reserved burial plot were a luxury.
Birth certificates are shown below for Elizabeth Ward,25 James William Ward,26 Thomas Joseph Ward,27 Joseph William Ward,28 Ellen Mary Ward,29 and Mary Ann Maria Ward.30 Mary Ward alternates between the use of Walters/Waters and Greening for her former surname. This would make sense if William Greening was her step-father from the age of four. She may have used the name in her daily life. However, the surname of her birth father, Walters, would have been her legal name.

In 1841 William Greening, wife Mary and son William were living on Mortlake High Street with James Brewer and his wife Eleanor (Walters) Brewer in the same household.31 Eleanor used the surname Greening as a witness in Thomas Ward and Mary Walters’s wedding,6 but she used the surname Walters when she married James Brewer.32
