BURGLARY IN BATAVIA LAID TO AUBURN BOY
The Auburn NY Citizen Friday, March 16, 1917, p. 6, col. 6
——-
Lawrence Stiles of this city, arrested in Buffalo on the charge of breaking into stores in Batavia
on Tuesday night, admitted burglarizing one of them but, denied any knowledge of the other. Stiles, who has been convicted in the local courts, is 24 years of age. When first arrested he gave the name of Edward Burns, but later gave the correct name.
The Auburnian admitted that it was he who broke into the Gould Store and took a traveling bag, which proved to be his undoing. For it was by a tag on the bag that he was caught. Both Rochester and Buffalo pawn brokers were given descriptions of the bag and the number on the tag, so that when he presented it in Buffalo he was immediately placed under arrest. He denies that he entered the Casey Store, another place robbed in Batavia.
When first arrested, Stiles implicated Frank Mooney, 28 years of age, of this city, but later he
exonerated Mooney saying he had no part in theburglary. Stiles waived examination and was sent
to jail to await the action of the Grand Jury.
Stiles was arrested in this city a year and a half ago in connection with the robbery of some
clothing at the Dennis Dye Works. He was sent to he Elmira Reformery for that crime. He was under parole to Chief Quigley of Rochester.
