JOHN MURRAY
John Murray, ninety-four years of age, the oldest resident of the Town of Montezuma, and one of the oldest residents of the county, passed away at his home in the [Mintline?] district, after an illness of about two weeks duration, on Saturday. Up to the time of his illness, Mr. Murray had enjoyed excellent health, and his intellect was as keen as his mind as bright as a man of much lesser years. The cause of sickness and death was due to sudden and general giving out of the vital forces.
Mr. Murray was born in Mountain Castle, County Waterford, Ireland, where he grew to young manhood. In 1851 [1852] he was married to Miss Mary Meehan, also of Waterford County, and in 1852 [1853], on the 27th of April, the young couple left Ireland for America, where they expected to find and were not disappointed, the opportunities which would be advantageous to intelligent men and women who were willing to work for them. After a voyage of five weeks and three days on the ocean and a hard journey by land they arrived in Montezuma. Within a short time they purchased the farm now known as the Murray homestead, where Mr. Murray passed away, having lived more than half a century of succeeding years on the place.
Mr. Murray was highly respected and esteemed. He was perhaps as well known as any man in Northern Cayuga County. His ever ready wit and genuine hospitality made him a companion worth while, whose company was eagerly sought. He was a farmer. He loved his work, and commuted with nature, from whom he learned many valuable lessons of life. Seven sons, three of whom are now living, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Murray. The surviving sons are Thomas, William and Dennis Murray, all of whom reside in the Mintline district. Mrs. Murray also survives the deceased.
The funeral service was held from the family home at 9 o’clock Saturday morning. A large assemblage of friends were present to pay a last tribute to the memory of the deceased. The services took place at St. John’s Church, Port Byron, at 10 o’clock. At the entrance to the church a procession of priests and attendants met the remains and a brief service was held, the procession heading the way to the altar. The funeral services consisted of a solemn requiem high mass and the burial service. Rev. J. J. Cosgrove of Montezuma was celebrant of the mass. Rev. Thomas O’Connor of Kings Ferry was deacon and Rev. John B. Crowley was subdeacon. The remains were laid to rest in the family plot in the Catholic Cemetery at Weedsport. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Cosgrove, assisted by Rev O’Connor and Rev. Crowley. The bearers were Philip Hearn, Jeremiah Connors, William Nugent, Michael Hearn, Daniel Mahoney and Daniel McNamara. —The Port Byron Chronicle, 21 Apr 1917

5. Mary Meehan was born about 1834 in Mountain Castle, County Waterford, Ireland [Map].28 She was the daughter of Dennis Meehan [10] and Mary Walsh [11]. Mary Meehan Murray died at the age of 83 years old on 6 Oct 1917 in Montezuma, Cayuga, New York, USA. She was buried at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Weedsport, Cayuga, New York, USA.29 Mother of William Murray [2]. Obituary of Mary Meehan Murray: Port Byron Chronicle, 13 Oct 1917
Obituary of Mary Meehan Murray, The Port Byron NY Chronicle, 13 Oct 1917

MRS. MARY MURRAY
Mrs. Mary Meehan Murray died at her home in Montezuma Saturday afternoon after an illness of almost a week’s duration. She was in the 85th year of her age, and had been in excellent health until a short time ago when the final forces of a naturally strong constitution began to give way under the burden of age. She was the widow of the late John Murray, one of the best known residents in Cayuga County, whose death preceded hers by about six months. Mrs. Murray was born in Mountain Castle, County Waterford, Ireland, where she grew to young womanhood. In 1852, she was married to John Murray, also a native of Mountain Castle, and the young couple set out to make their fortune in America. After a voyage of five weeks and three days on the ocean, they reached this country. In time they made their way over land in Montezuma, where they soon purchased the home now known as the Murray homestead and where they lived happily and successfully during more than a half century of time. They reared a fine family and there are now living three sons of the seven born to them. They are Thomas, William and Dennis Murray, all of whom reside in the [?] district.
Mrs. Murray was one of those whole souled people, whose personality bespoke the hospitality and generosity which constituted much to the making of a splendid character. She was one of the workers of the world, and from her work she extracted not only [?] results, but happiness and joyousness, even when the many [?] she was forced to meet. The lives of Mrs. Murray and her husband hold many a worthy lesson for those who will observe. She was highly respected and esteemed and her death is the cause of regret and sorrow to many friends.
The funeral service was held from the family home at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning and services took place at St. John’s church at 10 o’clock. Rev. J. J. Cosgrove was celebrant of the requiem high mass and was assisted in the burial services by several priests who were present from other charges. The remains were laid to rest at the family plot in the Catholic Cemetery at Weedsport. — The Port Byron Chronicle, 13 Oct 1917
