Gijsbert Haan was born in 1801 in the town Hilversum in Noord-Holland, Nederland (North Holland, the Netherlands).3 He was a weaver by occupation, and lived on a farm at the corner of the Groest and the Herenstraat in Hilversum.4 The Haan family had a long history in Hilversum, where they were well-established and financially successful. Gijsbert Haan would become the first in his family to give up this security and familiarity by immigrating to America, where he founded the Christian Reformed Church in North America.5
The first Haan to appear in records for Hilversum was Gerrit Claesz Haan. He was on several tax lists for Hilversum in the early 1700s.6,7 Gerrit’s oldest son Matthijs Gerritsz Haan was baptized in Hilversum in 1697, followed by Claas Gerritsz Haan in 1698. Matthijs’s son, Gijsbert Matthijsz Haan was baptized in 1725. Gijsbert married his first cousin Aagje Cornelisse Haan (daughter of Claas Geritsz Haan). He was a schoolmaster at the school on the Kerkbrink in Hilversum between 1769-1772.8 Gijsbert Matthijsz had altercations with the church because in his house he had a person of “Roman Catholic religion” that he provided tutoring in the subjects French and Latin. After a series of complaints, he was forced to leave the school in 1772.9
Behind the “Regthuls” was, as mentioned, the school, of which at the time of the great fire Gijsbert Haan was a schoolmaster. It was a public school, as well as the school at the Veenend. At the Kerkbrink, Protestant were youth taught the ABC’s, and the Veenend Catholic youth. 8
Petrus Gijsbertsz Haan, born in 1750, was the son of Gijsbert Matthijsz Haan and Aagje Cornelisse Haan. He was a successful carpet manufacturer and won awards for his tapestry work.10,11,12 His sons Gijsbert (the Gijsbert in the photo at the top) and Gerrit followed in his footsteps by becoming carpet weavers and manufacturers.13
Gijsbert’s mother, Tijmetje Rijks Das, died when he was only 11 years old, leaving his father with ten children to look after. A heartfelt obituary for her, written by Petrus Haan, appeared in the dual language newspaper Feuille politique du département du Zuiderzee, or Staatkundig dagblad van het Departement der Zuiderzee.14
This afternoon at about two o’clock I was plunged into the deepest mourning. My dearly beloved wife TYMETJE R. DAS, with whom I passed beyond seventeen years in a most happy union, was taken to me by death at the age of thirty-eight. Every sensible heart will feel, how much this blow strikes me as well as my ten children, for the most part in very young age. Though the well-founded belief that it has passed over to regions of the blessed, and that the Lord will not abandon orphans, is in a condition to console me. I am assured of the part my friends will take, without their giving them to me by letters of condolence.
Hilversum, 12 November 1812
PETRUS HAAN.
Gijsbert Petrusz Haan (1801-1874) was part of the religious movement of Seceders from the Dutch Reformed Church. This movement, which began in the 1830s, disagreed with the liberal direction the established church was moving.15 Gijsbert held forbidden church meetings in his home. One of these meetings was the subject of a raid by the police and accompanying mob of townspeople in 1836.4 Over the following decade, Gijsbert suffered ostracism and financial hardship because of his religious beliefs. He looked to emigration as a solution to those problems.
Gijsbert Haan emigrated from the Netherlands with his wife Marretje Pos and 9 living children (out of the 14 born to the couple) in 1847, due to financial hardship and religious persecution. The family arrived in New York, New York, USA on 26 Jul 1847 on the SS Centurion.16
The Haan family settled in New York, but soon made their way to Ottawa County, Michigan. Gijsbert first appears on the membership list of Vriesland Reformed Church on 23 Nov 1849.17
The Register van Lidmaten (list of members) for Vriesland Reformed Church in Ottawa County Michigan records Gijsbert Haan as a member starting on 23 Nov 1849. The 1850 United States Census shows Gijsbert Haan living in Holland, Ottawa, Michigan, with his wife and children.18 In 1851 he joined the Grand Rapids branch of the church. He was not a member for long, however. Gijsbert Haan was the leader of another secessionist movement in 1857, which culminated in the founding of the Dutch Christian Reformed Church.20 Among the reasons for secession were: hymns and choirs in worship, the types of Sunday School books used, admitting Christians to communion who weren’t in the Reformed Church, and preaching from ministers who weren’t in the Reformed Church. After the hardships the Seceders had experienced in the Netherlands, seeing liberal trends in the North American churches infuriated him.21Gijsbert’s son Gijsbert Gijsbertsz Haan became a member of the Vriesland Reformed church on 14 Feb 1850, and left the church in March 1857 when his father founded the new church.22 His reason for leaving was noted on the Register van Lidmaten as door afscheiding or by separation. Other members on surrounding pages that separated at the same time are Douwe Wijngaarden, Jan Wijngaarden.
In the 1860 United States Census, Gijsbert Haan and Marretje Pos are living in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. Gijsbert is listed as a “carpet weaver.”24 He was still weaving carpets at the age of 70, when the Haans appeared in the 1870 United States Census in Grand Rapids.25 Gijsbert Haan died four years later of liver disease.26 His wife Marretje Pos followed two years later in 1876. They were buried together in Fulton Street Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.27
Our branch of the family, Cornelia Haan (daughter of Gijsbert Gijsbertsz Haan and Christina van der Slik, and granddaughter of Gijsbert Haan and Marretje Pos) and her husband Eduard Marinus van der Moere left Grand Rapids for Indianapolis between 1903-1908. According to family legend (information passed down from my great-grandfather James William van der Moere) the main reason for leaving was disagreement of some sort with the religious community in Grand Rapids. Eduard was very insistent that his family was American now and their children would not speak Dutch. When the family returned to Grand Rapids for family reunions, James was unable to understand most of the conversations between his family members. It is not clear which church it is that they had the disagreement with. Eduard Marinus van der Moere and Cornelia Haan were members of the Dutch Reformed Church in the 1920s when they moved briefly to Detroit, Michigan, so I am guessing their arguments were with the Christian Reformed Church that Cornelia’s grandfather Gijsbert Haan had founded.29 Members of the Christian Reformed Church spoke Dutch as their main language in order to retain their unique culture and religious beliefs. This continued until an intentional shift around World War I.30 Eduard’s strong stance against his children speaking Dutch makes sense in the context of religious disagreements with that church. However, it is all speculation at this point.
All of the church records for the town of Hilversum were destroyed in a fire in 1766. However, a substitute baptism register [Doopboek Hervormd Gemeente te Hilversum] and marriage register [Trouwregister, 1713-1766] was recreated in 1767 and compiled by J. W. van Yssum from recollections of church members and elders, and surviving available records of that time. There are naturally some gaps, but the Haan family is traceable in the registers back to 1697.

The numbering follows that shown in the chart, and also includes information about the other children of each ancestor and their spouses.
