The Mulcahys of Kilkeany, Waterford, Ireland

Kilkeanymountain, County Waterford, Looking down across the Nire Valley toward the Comeragh Mountains

When John Hayes died in 1887, he was a resident of Knockavannia, the townland just next to Kilkeany.

According to the book Irish Pedigrees: Or, The Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation, written by John O’Hart in 1877, [link to Google Books] there is one ancestor of all of the Mulcahys from Kilkeany, which was John Mulcahy, born about 1740.122 He was the son of Thomas Mulcahy, who fought at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Thomas Mulcahy acquired Kilkeany and gave it to his son John. John had four sons and five daughters, but only one son, James Mulcahy (born about 1770) had children. John O’Hart’s book details the descendants of Thomas Mulcahy. That pedigree is reproduced below with added information from other sources. The James Mulcahy that John Hayes kept coming into conflict with according to the Petty Sessions records is a grandson of the James Mulcahy born 1770 Kilkeany, Waterford, Ireland. It is likely Johanna Mulcahy is a granddaughter of that James Mulcahy as well but it can’t be confirmed. Because of gaps in available records, the names of Johanna Mulcahy’s parents remain unknown.

Extraordinary Outrage—Dungarvan, The Cork Constitution, 19 Nov 1885

Intelligence has just reached here of a most extraordinary case of firing into a dwelling-house which, if the facts were not reliably vouched for, would seem almost incredible. It appears that at 10 o’clock last night the police of Ballymacarbery were on patrol duty at Kilkeany, a wild region near the Corneragh mountains. The district was reported lately as being disturbed, and the police hid themselves in the fowl-house of a farmer named James Mulcahy, a tenant of Major Chearnley. They had not been long concealed when they heard some person approaching the kitchen window of the farm, and before they could prevent it two shots were fired in rapid succession through the window. The police rushed to the spot instantly and arrested the delinquent, and they at once recognized him as James Mulcahy, the very occupier of the house into which he was after firing. Needless to say that James found himself in a rather awkward position. It appears that some of the neighbours had given information at the police barrack that shots had been heard frequently in the vicinity of their houses, and some suspicion fell on Mulcahy. He was brought before a justice of the peace at Ballymacarbery, and was remanded to next petty sessions. The police subsequently discovered that the man’s family had all retired to bed when the shots were fired, and they are at a loss to discover a motive for the outrage.–The Cork Constitution, 19 Nov 1885 123
