John J. Hayes, Sr., husband of Ruth Potter Hayes of 17 Foote St., died Friday at Auburn Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. Mr. Hayes was born in Auburn, the son of the late Maurice and Katherine Stiles Hayes, and had always resided here. He retired in 1964 after thirty-two years of service as a correction officer at The Auburn Correctional Facility. During WWI he served in the Marine Corps with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Mr. Hayes was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a former member of the Marine Corps League. Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters: Mrs. Paul (Helen) Warden of Dresden and Mrs. John (Ruth Ann) Hai of Auburn; a son; John J. Hayes, Jr. of Auburn; 9 grandchildren; a brother, Edward L. Hayes of Auburn; nieces and nephews. Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at The Farrell Funeral Home, 84 South St., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Vigil services will be at 8:45 p.m. Sunday.
