James Styles , hard man to handle, smarts off to police in court, Auburn NY Daily Bulletin, 28 Dec 1896
James Stiles will learn that it is not well to play with fire. James was arrested shortly after 11 o’clock Saturday evening in Water Street. James is a hard man to handle and it took three officers to land him at the City hall. This morning when arraigned before the recorder he pleaded guilty to intoxication and was sentenced to pay a fine of $3 or go to jail for 15 days.
“Oh that’s all right,” remarked Stiles as he started for the door, “that’s all right.”
“What’s that you said?” asked the recorder.
“I said that’s all right,” replied Stiles.
“Well I’ll teach you to talk to the court when sentence is being imposed,” said his honor and he raised $2 on the fine and 15 on the number of days.
