James Kavanagh appeared in a handful of news articles, the first on 5 Sep 1854, right around the time of Griffith’s Primary Valuation.

5 Sep 1854
CAPEL-STREET POLICE OFFICE—This Day. Before Dr. Kelly
A man named John Brennan was summoned to answer the complaint of Thomas Cormack for obtaining a sum of 10l. from him under false pretences. (The defendant did not appear)
The charge was grounded upon some bill transactions; and the allegation against the defendant was that he forged the name of “James Kavanagh”—a person residing in Carrigeen, in the county Kildare—to a bill for 10l., which he (defendant) passed to the complainant, to whom he had previously become indebted.
Mr. Dowse appeared to sustain the complainant. He examined James Kavanagh, who positively denied that he authorized the defendant to put his name to any bill bearing the date “15th of May, ’54”—the date of the bill in question. A man named O’Hara, who purported to be the acceptor of the bill, was also examined, and he negatived the assumption of having accepted the bill…Mr. Dowse stated that he had several complaints arising out of bill transactions to bring before the Court against Mr. Brennan.

The Valuation Revision Lists, or Cancelled Land books are source related to Griffith’s Valuation and contain changes to the ownership and occupation of the land plots in the Primary Valuation. When each book was filled up with changes, the book was then “cancelled” and a new one was started. These had not previously been available online, but now FamilySearch has digitized a portion of the collection, available through the catalog search but still unindexed. In 1889, the land switched hands from James Kavanagh to his heirs.27

When the last Kavanagh sibling James died on 3 Apr 1923, the land went to his niece Ellen Whitehead.28

Teresa Kavanagh married a soldier James Whitehead on 20 Mar 1872 in Dublin. Their first daughter Ellen Whitehead was born in Carrigeen in 1873 while their remaining children were born at various military installations in Ireland and England. Ellen returned to live in Carrigeen after her mother’s death in Battersea, Surrey and took over ownership of the land after James Kavanagh Jr. died in 1924.

Anne Kavanagh (1830-1905)

Anne Kavanagh married her second cousin Michael Kelly in 1875 in Baltinglass. A dispensation for consanguinity in the 3rd degree was required and noted in the marriage register. (Initially I thought this meant first cousin) Michael’s parents were Michael Kelly and Margaret Nolan of Carrigeen, so Margaret Nolan must have been Catherine Nolan’s first cousin. Anne and Michael Kelly had no children. George, Maria, Julia, Sarah and James P Kavanagh remained unmarried and lived the rest of their lives in Carrigeen, County Kildare.

The story of Irish Census records is a sad one and for those new to Irish genealogy a bit appalling to learn how much Irish family history has been lost. On 30 Jun 1922, the 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 population census records were burned in a fire at Dublin’s Four Courts building during the Irish Civil War.  The 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census records were intentionally destroyed by the government after statistical information was extracted. The 1901 Census, the first surviving Census of Ireland, shows James Kavanagh and Catherine Nolan’s children were living at the farm in Carrigeen.29, 30

My sister and I visited Baltinglass last month in June 2016. The very kind residents of Carrigeen showed us the location of the house, demolished in the 1960s that the Kavanaghs and Whiteheads occupied in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They knew of Ellen Whitehead and also said her younger brother Mick came to live there at some point after 1911.

The Whiteheads are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Baltinglass although we were not able to locate their graves (it is a large cemetery).

Hi Erika, the 3rd degree of consanguinity denotes second cousins. Usually (but not always) the annotation will say the 3rd and 3rd degrees. First cousins would be 2nd and 2nd. First cousins once removed would be 2nd and 3rd. Hope that clarifies things. I find your posts on your Baltinglass ancestors interesting.

Thank you, Paul! Figuring out the degrees of consanguinity was a little confusing. I have been reading your book Baltinglass Chronicles. The sections on the Land War are particularly helpful in understanding the background for those events. I appreciate all of the detail and the painstaking listing of sources!
