The Tithe Applotment Books – Misfiled Parishes
The Tithe Applotment Books for Ireland are a wonderful genealogical resource. The Census records for Ireland before 1901 largely do not survive. Tithe Applotment Books are a standard substitute that, when used along with other sources, help fill the gaps left by the missing Ireland Census records. The Tithe Applotment Books have been digitized and are available on the website for the National Archives of Ireland. They are also available on FamilySearch, with a slightly different index, so it is worth checking both sources.
While using these books in my family history research, I noticed that the digital files for some parishes had mistakenly been indexed under the wrong counties and under different parish names. The spelling of townlands varied so much at this time and transcriptions are often poor due to faded images and hard-to-read handwriting. This can make it almost impossible to find the missing parishes in the digital files.
The parish Carnew in Counties Wicklow and Wexford was mistakenly filed under the parish Carnalway in County Kildare. The parish Crosspatrick in Counties Wicklow and Wexford was mistakenly filed under the parish of Crossmolina in County Mayo. The parish of Graney in County Kildare was mistakenly filed under the parish Granard in County Longford, and also misspelled as “Granny”. The parish Kilrush in County Wexford was mistakenly filed under the parish of Kilrush in County Waterford. Finally, The parish Kinneigh in County Cork, Barony of East Carbery (West Division), was mistakenly filed with the parish of Kineagh in County Kildare.
The Below the parish names are a list of townlands for each microfilm frame number. These link to the corresponding digitized image for that frame on the website for the National Archives of Ireland. The beginning of each parish on the digitized microfilm hosted by FamilySearch is also linked.
