Henry Brooks and Mariah Fuller of Hancock County, Indiana and Stringtown, West Indianapolis

Henry Brooks was born about 1810-1813 in North Carolina. On 7 Jun 1838, Henry married Mariah Fuller in Hancock County, Indiana. William Rector, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated the marriage. Mariah Fuller was born about 1813 in Brown County, Ohio, where many original pioneers of Hancock County lived prior to settling in Indiana. Henry and Mariah had 10 children who lived long enough to appear in surviving records.

  1. Samuel S Brooks (1838-1905 — Spouses: Harriet Josephine Sargent, Christina Ellen Moroskey
  2. Clarissa Jane Brooks (1841-1900 — Spouse: James Ross
  3. Nathan B Brooks (1844-1887) — Spouse: Saba Jane Glisson
  4. Sarah E Brooks, 1845-1925) — Spouse: Hiram Williamson
  5. James Brooks (1847-?)
  6. Mary A Brooks (1848-1904) — Spouses: George Randolph, Joseph H Faulkner
  7. Nancy Ann Brooks (1851-1918) — Spouse: Eugene Bretney
  8. Louisa Angeline Brooks (1853-1929) — Spouse: John Henry Rhoda
  9. Margaret E Brooks (1854-1883) — Spouse: Arthur Thomas Bell
  10. Christina Brooks (1858-1860)

The Brooks family should be listed in the 1840 US Census, but the only person with this name listed in either Hancock or Marion Counties was a Henry Brooks in Sugar Creek Township, Hancock County, Indiana. The details of his family (1 male under 5, 1 male 20-29, 2 females under 5, 2 females 5-10, and one female 30-39) don’t quite fit our Henry Brooks, who was the father of only one child in 1840. It is unclear if this Brooks family was related to the Henry Brooks that married Mariah Brooks. There was a James Brooks in Union Township, Hancock County whose family details match Henry and Mariah Brooks (1 male 20-29, 1 female 20-29, 1 male under 5). Yet there is no proof Henry used a middle name of any sort. Henry and Mariah could also have been living with another family. Because only heads of household were recorded prior to 1840, neither would be named on the Census if this was the case.

The first residence record for Henry Brooks is in the 26 Oct 1844 edition of the Indiana State Journal in a “List of Lands and Lots returned Delinquent for the non-payment of Taxes due thereon for the year 1843, and previously, in Marion County, State of Indiana.” Henry Brooks, Franklin Township, no. 1490, polls:1, Description: seqseq [South East Quarter of the South East Quarter], Section 34, Township 15, Range 5, 40 Acres. The map below to the right is this exact plot of land mapped on the website of Indiana GIS. Henry Brooks was not the first person to own this land. The Tract Book for 1821-1851, transcribed in Marion County, Indiana Records Miscellanea, shows Andrew Rock purchasing this exact 40 acres on 28 Mar 1836.

The 1850 US Census indeed shows Henry Brooks was living in Franklin Township, Marion County, Indiana with Wife Mariah age 37, born in Ohio, and children: Samuel S age 11, Clarissa J Brooks age 9, Nathan B Brooks age 6, Sarah A Brooks age 4, and Mary A Brooks age 2.

1850 US Census, Franklin Tonwship, Marion County, Indiana: Henry Brooks family

Franklin Township, Marion County Indiana, T15N, 5E, Sec 34, 1855

Henry Brooks moved his family from Franklin Township to Center Township sometime in the 1850s. The above map is a section of the 1855 Condit, Wright & Hayden, Map of Marion County Indiana. Section 34 is on the right side, and the 40 acres occupied by Henry Brooks was at this time owned by A Leonard. The 1858 Indianapolis City Directory lists two Henry Brooks, a Drayman on S. Delaware and a carpenter on Ohio between New Jersey and East. Therefore, the Brooks family sold and moved away from their farm in Franklin Township sometime between 1850 and 1855.

In the 1860 Census, Henry Brooks age 50, born in North Carolina, was living in Center Township, Marion County, Indiana with wife Marie Brooks age 47 born in Ohio, and children Samuel Brooks age 21, Nathan Brooks 17, Sarah Brooks 15, James Brooks 13, Mary Brooks 12, Nancy Brooks 10, Louisa Brooks 8, Margaret Brooks 6, and Christina Brooks 2. Some of their neighbors were Benjamin Vanblaricum, a fisherman age 25 with his wife Ann (Phoebe Ann Brooks), and Hiram Williamson age 27, who married Henry and Mariah’s daughter Sarah that year on July 4th.

The Brooks family lived in a neighborhood west of the White River called Stringtown, or Indianola. It was just above the village of Belmont, which became the city of West Indianapolis.

Henry Brooks was recorded in the 1861 Sutherland Indianapolis Directory as a teamster living 3/4 mile northwest of Indianola. He appears in the 1867 and 1869 Edward’s Annual Indianapolis Directory as a carpenter living in West Indianapolis. Henry Brooks is also listed in the 1867 Logan’s Indianapolis Directory as a carpenter boarding at Ray House.

1860 US Census, Center Twp, Marion County, Indiana: Henry Brooks family

The 1870 United States Census.  Because the census was so poorly done, there was a Second Enumeration in February of 1871. Some of the Brooks family members were enumerated twice because of this. Mariah Fuller Brooks died sometime before 1869, and Henry married Martha Schwartz (nee Bosworth) on 8 Apr 1869. Henry is listed in the 1870 Census (1st enum) as a Carpenter born in North Carolina about 1815. Living with him is Martha, his new wife, and his 16 year-old step-daughter Ester Elizabeth Schwartz (although she is listed as Esther Brooks in the Census).  In the 2nd Enumeration, Henry Brooks is not listed at all, but Martha and Esther Elizabeth are, along with another person named Elizabeth Brooks age 28 born in Maryland. Henry Brooks was still alive, because he is on record selling property in 1872, but apparently not living in Indianapolis. The 28 year-old Elizabeth Brooks doesn’t seem to match anyone in the family.

There are several real estate transactions posted in Indianapolis papers related to the Brooks family from 1870-1872. Samuel Brooks, Clarissa J Ross, Mary A Randolph, Nancy Bretney, and father Henry Brooks all sell part of a lot in the West Indianapolis subdivision called Ray and Blake’s to Sarah E Williamson. The last transfer of land from Nancy Bretney to Sarah E Williamson was printed in the 18 Oct 1872 issue of the Indianapolis News. It specifically mentions Nancy Bretney is an heir of Mariah Brooks, deceased.

Below is a more detailed map of this neighborhood from 1899. It is clear where Ray and Blake’s Subdivision was. The zoomed-in section on the right shows where individual lot numbers are marked, but it is not clear which part is “Square 1” where the Brooks family owned their land. Most of the buildings from Blake and Ray’s subdivision in the West Indianapolis neighborhood of Stringtown no longer exist, and many of the street names have changed. The land between Blake and Ray’s and the White River is now home to the Indianapolis Zoo.

The real estate transaction posted in the 28 May 1872 Indianapolis newspaper is the last record mentioning Henry Brooks. His name is not listed in the Indianapolis Mortality Record (1 Sep 1872- 31 Dec 1881), nor in the Indiana Death Index (1882-1920) transcribed by the WPA. His last appearance in the Indianapolis City directories was in 1869. However, his second wife Martha is listed in the directory every year starting 1873 as “Mrs. Martha Brooks,” In 1878 and after, she is noted as the widow of Henry. Married women were almost never mentioned without their husbands in directories of that time unless they were widows, so it is possible Henry died prior to 1873 and, for unknown reasons, the directory omitted her widow status until 1878. Alternatively, Henry may have been living and working elsewhere, only dying just before the 1878 directory information was collected. So far, no death or cemetery records have been located for either Henry Brooks or Mariah Fuller Brooks.

Several Brooks family reunions were held in Hancock County in the 1920s-1930s, and attended by descendants of Henry and Mariah Brooks. Hancock County, Indiana newspapers reported on many of these events as well as social visits with family members in other counties and cities.

Descendants of Henry Brooks and Mariah Fuller

1. Samuel S Brooks (1839-1905)

Samuel S Brooks (Henry1) was born on 06 Jun 1839 in Hancock County, Indiana, USA. Samuel married his first wife, Harriet Josephine Sargent, daughter of Samuel Sargent and Philadelphia Ham, on 26 Apr 1869 in Hancock County, Indiana, USA. Harriette was born about 1852 in Indiana, USA. The family lived in Buck Creek, Hancock County in 1870, moving to West Indianapolis sometime before 1880, where they appear in the 1880 Census. Samuel and Harriet divorced on 3 Oct 1883 in Marion County, Indiana. Harriet married Jacob N Harmon on 24 Aug 1892 in Black Hawk County, Iowa, USA. Samuel married his second wife, Christina Ellen Moroskey, daughter of Anthony Henry Maroskey and Christina Koch, on 11 Jan 1884 in Hancock County, Indiana, USA. Christina was born Jul 1863 in Hancock County, Indiana. By the time of the 1900 US Census, Samuel had moved his family back to Hancock County, Indiana. He died five years later on 21 Jun 1905 in the town of Mohawk in Hancock County. His death was a complication of a 1861 Civil War injury in Cedar Creek, VA that destroyed his foot, and the subsequent amputation of that limb. His death certificate lists his mother Mariah Fuller’s place of birth as Brown County, Ohio. This is the only record that specifies where in Ohio she was born. After Samuel’s death, Christina Ellen married Adam F Wilson on 10 May 1908 in Hancock County, Indian. Christina died on 3 Apr 1934 in Buck Creek, Hancock, Indiana.

She married Hiram Williamson, son of Benjamin Williamson on 04 Jul 1860 in Marion County, Indiana, shortly after the 1860 Census in which she appears with her parents. Ten years later, Hiram and Sarah were still living in West Indianapolis, this time with three children Eldora, Charles, and Mabel. The Williamsons moved to Effingham County, Illinois after 1872, and Hiram filed for divorce from Sarah in 1878, and the notice appeared in the 31 Jan 1878 Effingham Democrat. Two years later, Hiram Williamson was still living in Effingham County, IL, now with his new wife Susan, Hiram and Sarah’s daughter Mabel Williamson, and several step-children. Sarah Williamson is no where to be found in the 1880 Census, but Indianapolis city directory records show her moving back to West Indianapolis and living with her brother Nathan Brooks in 1877 and 1878. 5. James Brooks (1847-?)

James Brooks (Henry1) was born about 1847 in Indiana. It is unknown where and when he died. James Brooks is listed in the 1860 US Census living with Henry and Mariah Brooks. However, he is not listed in the 1850 Census. It is possible that was an error on the enumerator’s part, or perhaps he was at a relative’s house at the time. Because family relationships are not noted until the 1880 US Census, it is possible that the James in the 1860 Census is not one of Henry and Mariah’s children, but in fact a cousin or other relative.

The Second Enumeration shows Maggie Brooks listed in the same household working in a Woolen factory, next to the household of Eugene Bretney, machinist, and his wife Nancy. Because Nancy and Eugene married in August, after the first enumeration of the 1870 census was taken in July, they would be living in a different household by the 2nd enumeration in 1871. Indianapolis City directory records for 1869, 1870, and 1871 show Eugene Bretney, and Nancy and Maggie [Margaret] Brooks all working at the Hoosier Woolen Factory and living at 416 W Washington Street. Like Mary’s husband Joseph H Faulkner, Eugene Bretney was an engineer.

8. Louisa Angeline Brooks (1853-1929)

Louisa Angeline Brooks (Henry1) was born on 3 Oct 1853 in Marion County, Indiana. After appearing in the 1860 US Census with her parents and siblings, Louisa Angeline moved back to Hancock County, Indiana sometime before 1870. She was recorded living in the home of Samuel Barnard and Letha Griffith Barnard in the 1870 US Census. Also living in the same household was 14 year-old Jacob Fuller. Jacob was the son of Joseph Fuller and Jane Wilson. Several of Jacob’s siblings, including Amanda Fuller and Andrew Jackson Fuller, were neighbors of the Barnards in the 1870-80 Census. Joseph and Jane were from Brown County, Ohio, the same place Henry Brooks’s wife Mariah Fuller was born. It is likely Joseph and Mariah Fuller were siblings, but no records have yet been uncovered to definitively prove that relationship. Joseph Fuller drowned in Sugar Creek in Hancock County on 25 Jan 1860. His horse was pulling the wagon across the ford when he fell out of it into the water. His body was found the next morning.

At the time of the 1880 US Census, Louisa was still unmarried and living in the home of Samuel and Letha Griffith Barnard, this time with her two year-old son Clarence Leslie Brooks. His father’s identity is not known. Louisa’s relation to the head of household is “cousin”. Letha Griffith, Samuel Barnard’s wife, was the daughter of Owen Griffith, one of the first settlers in Hancock County, Indiana, and his wife Margaret Campbell. My mother, the 3rd great-granddaughter of Mariah Fuller, has several strong DNA matches with descendants of Owen Griffith’s siblings Evan Griffith, Mason Griffith, Sarah Griffith. For this reason, I believe Louisa’s “cousin” relationship is with Letha Griffith and not her husband Samuel Barnard.
