Townlands Transcribed in Residents and Occupiers on the Estate of The Earl Fitzwilliam, 1827 & 1839

This is not a complete transcription or account of all individuals recorded in the manuscript. Head tenants are in bold type, listed above their sub-tenants.Where head tenants have no age next to their name, they probably lived somewhere else. Land area was recorded in Irish Acres. These are the same units used in the Tithe Applotment Books.2 To compare the land holdings from the Fitzwilliam Estate records to Griffith’s Valuation,3 which uses Statute Acres, it is necessary to convert the units.4

1 Irish Acre = 7840 yards2 = 4 Roods (Irish) = 1.62 Statute Acres
1 Rood (Irish) = 1960 yards2 = 40 Perches (Irish)
1 Perch (Irish) = 49 yards2
1 Statute Acre = 4840 yards2 = 4 Roods (Statute) = 0.617 Irish Acres
1 Rood (Statute) = 1210 yards2 = 40 Perches (Statute)
1 Perch (Statute) = 30.25 yards2

Information recorded for each tenant includes:
Occupier: Name of Head of Household (HoH)
Age: Age of Male HoH
Size of land holding:
A=acres (Irish)
R=roods (Irish)
P=perches (Irish)
Wife’s Age: Age of Wife of HoH, or Age of Female HoH
M Child: Number of Male Children
F Child: Number of Female Children
M Serv: Number of Male Servants
F Serv: Number of Female Servants
Occupation: occupation, occupation of sons often listed for widows
Notes: extra information written about occupier

    Hi Erika, It looks like you have done a lot of work transcribing the Account of Residents and occupiers of land on the estate of Earl Fitzwilliam. My husband’s ancestors came from the area. They were from the townlands of Motabower and Ballyellis, near Carnew (just over the border in Wexford). Just wondering if you would know if these townlands or any part of Wexford was included in this manuscript. We are going to Dublin in a few weeks and I have about an hour to spend in the library.
    I could take a look, but I thought I wouldn’t bother if it doesn’t include the townlands in Wexford. Thanks for your help!

    Leah, I did not see either Motabower or Ballyellis in the index of townlands. It is possible they may be grouped with another townland, as that happened in some cases. I will link pictures I took of the index to the posts. Hopefully that will help!
    -Erika
