Last month I was fortunate enough visit the church of St. Mary the Virgin, Mortlake in London. I believe this is the oldest location related to my family history that I have ever been. It was here on 5 Aug 18381 that my third great-grandparents Thomas Ward and Mary Ann Maria Walters were married, marking an X in lieu of their signatures on the register. Neither Thomas nor Mary could read or write, both being the children of labourers in the time before compulsory schooling.

Thomas Ward had been born near the town of Witney in Oxfordshire2 and migrated to Mortlake, likely looking for work in the market gardens that supplied produce to London markets. Mary Ann Maria Walters was born in the parish of Epsom in Surrey, daughter of Francis Walters and Mary Price. They had eleven children between 1839 and 1861. Two died in childhood (James William and Emily), eight married and had children and one (the youngest, William) joined the British Army. Two of their children, Elizabeth Ward Whitehead and Eliza Ward Spencer, joined the Mormon church and immigrated to Utah in the 1880s. Another child Alfred Ward emigrated in 1880 and settled in Genesee County, Michigan, USA.
See Mary Ann Maria Walters for more information about the Walters, Price and Greening families.

In 1841 both the Ward and Greening families appeared in the Census for England. Thomas Ward was an agricultural labourer at Strand-on-the-Green, Chiswick in the Lane by Dean’s Garden.59 This was the market garden owned by Edward Dean in Chiswick. William Greening, wife Mary and son William are living on Mortlake High Street with James Brewer and wife Eleanor in the same household.60 Eleanor used the surname Greening as a witness in Thomas Ward and Mary Walters wedding 1 but she used the surname Walters when marrying James Brewer.14
Thomas and Mary Ward’s first son James William died at 9 months and was buried at St. Nicholas Church in Chiswick.10 They went on to have three more children while living at Strand-on-the-Green: Thomas, Joseph William and Ellen Mary. In 1849 they had another child Mary Ann Maria Ward who was baptized at Ham St. Andrew.41 Finally, Thomas moved the family to Battersea around 1850 where he first worked as a coal carter In 1851 Thomas was living on Battersea High Street with his wife Mary and children Elizabeth, Thomas, Joseph, Eleanor and Mary A.61
By the time of the 1861 Census, the Ward family had moved to 12 Mendip Road in Battersea, where Thomas was working as a labourer in the factory for Price’s Patent Candles on York Rd down the street.62 Thomas and Mary had five more children in Battersea: Eliza, Alfred, Emily, George and William. Emily Ward, born in 1856, does not appear with her family in subsequent census returns so she must have died before 1861. Living with Thomas and Mary Ward in 1861 were their children Thomas, Joseph, Heleanor (Ellen?), Margaret (Mary Ann Maria?), Eliza, Alfred, George and their 3 month-old grandchild Emily J Ward. Elizabeth Ward, the mother of baby Emily J was unmarried and living in Upper East Sheen, working as a nursery maid63, most likely a wet nurse since she had a three month old daughter. If this was so I do wonder how her own child was fed.
In 1871, Thomas and Mary Ward were still living on Mendip Rd, this time at No. 7.2 Three children, Alfred, George and William, were living with them at home. The rest of their children had married and started families. Three of their grown children, Ellen64, Elizabeth65 and Thomas66, lived on Mendip Rd or just near it. (Canterbury Place was a cul-de-sac off of Mendip Rd). Before the end of the next decade, Alfred and George would marry and start families as well. William Ward remained unmarried and joined the British Army in 1879.58 He frequently found himself in trouble by creating disturbances while drunk, drawing his bayonet on the escorts that removed him, threatening and offering violence to his superior officers, assaulting police constables and escaping confinement. It remains unclear if he married or had issue.
Mary Ann Maria (Walters) Ward died from cardiac disease three years later on Christmas Day in 1874.7 Her daughter Elizabeth (Ward) Whitehead witnessed her death.
Thomas Ward died five years after his wife on 10 Dec 1879 from stomach cancer.8 He was living at the home of his daughter Elizabeth (Ward) Whitehead and still working at the candle factory. His son-in-law Charles Spencer, husband of Eliza Ward, witnessed his death.
The building that used to house the factory for Price’s Patent Candles is still standing on York Road. I went here with my sister and my cousin the same day after visiting St. Mary the Virgin in Mortlake. There is a candle shop inside the building now.
