Thomas James Ward and Sarah Hannah Lucy Courtneidge were my great-great grandparents through my grandfather James Joseph Ward (1920-2000), and his father Alfred John Ward (1883-1953).
Thomas James Ward was born on 9 Jan 1843 at Strand-on-the-Green in Chiswick.2 His father Thomas Ward was from Oxfordshire, and worked as an agricultural labourer in the Market Gardens of Edward Dean, as shown in the 1841 Census of England.3 By the time Thomas was born, Thomas Sr. listed his occupation as “maltster.” His mother Mary Anne Maria Walters had been born in the parish of Epsom in Surrey to Francis Walters and Maria Price.
For more about the family of Thomas James Ward, see: Thomas Ward, labourer in a Candle Factory and Mary Ann Maria Walters, wife of Thomas Ward. Thomas was given the name Thomas Joseph on both his birth and baptism record at Chiswick St. Nicholas,4 but afterwards went by Thomas James Ward in all records. I thought this was odd until I was told my own grandfather, James Joseph Ward, had been registered with a different name than that by which he was known his whole life. He only found this out when he went to obtain a birth certificate as an adult.

By the 1850’s Thomas’s family had moved from Mortlake to Battersea. In the 1851 Census of England, the Ward family was living on Battersea High Street, where Thomas Ward, Sr worked as a coal carter.5 Soon Thomas Sr. began working at the factory of Price’s Patent Candles on York Road in Battersea. In the 1861 Census, the Ward family was living on Mendip Road, and Thomas Ward’s occupation was listed “Labourer in a Candle Factory.”6 Both of these locations are clearly visible on the Ordnance Survey map below, which was surveyed in 1866.7

Thomas James Ward married Sarah Hannah Lucy Courtneidge on 5 Aug 1867 at St. Paul’s Church in Hammersmith. Sarah had been born in 1844 in Wimbledon to Charles Courtneidge, a coachman or fly-driver, and Sarah Watson, a shoemaker’s daughter from Chelsea.9 Before Thomas met Sarah, she was working as a Needlewoman and boarding at the home of James Weaver of Bell’s Cottages in Wandsworth, as can be seen in the 1861 Census.10 Sarah’s father Charles Courtneidge had dropped dead the year before while driving his fly for a customer on the Lower Road to Richmond in nearby Putney.11
Thomas and Sarah’s first child, Thomas James Ward, had been born a little over three years before their marriage on 26 Dec 1863, at 17 Creek Street in Battersea.12 Sarah listed her surname as Ward on his birth certificate, although she Thomas James were not yet married. Thomas James Sr.’s occupation was “distillery labourer.” He would have worked at the Wandsworth Distillery, located directly next to Mendip Road, as shown on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map.7

Creek Street no longer exists as a thoroughfare, but it’s location is still evident as an alley between Lavender Road and York Road.
I believe Thomas James and Sarah had another child named Ellen in 1866, between Thomas James born in 1863 and Mary Ann who was born around 1868. Wandsworth Union Infirmary birth registers list an illegitimate daughter of “Sarah Courtnidge” born on 25 Jun 1866.13 A child born in the workhouse would be listed under the mother’s legal surname. Ellen died at the age of 2 months. She was buried at St. Mary’s Church in Battersea on 6 Sep 1866.14 The address in the burial record was 9 Ann Street, York Road, Battersea. I have not ordered the birth or death certificates for Ellen Courtneidge to confirm whether or not she is the daughter of Thomas James and Sarah. However, Courtneidge is an uncommon name, and a 5-year gap between children would be uncharacteristic of the couple, who had 11 other children over a period of 26 years.
Thomas James and Sarah Ward appear in the 1871 Census, living at 10 Canterbury Place with children Thomas Jr. age 7, Mary Ann age 3, and Elizabeth age 8 months. Canterbury Place was a cul-de-sac off of Mendip Road.15 Living right around the corner at No. 7 Mendip Road were Thomas James’s parents Thomas and Mary Ann Maria Ward with his younger brothers Alfred, George, and William.16 At No. 11 Mendip Road lived Thomas James’s oldest sister Elizabeth Ward Whitehead with her husband George Whitehead and children Emily J, Frank, George, Frederick, and Ellis Whitehead.17 Next door at No. 10 Mendip Road was his other sister Ellen Mary Ward Creamer Macarty with her husband George Creamer Macarty, a Thames Lighterman, and their children Ellen, Mary, and George Creamer Macarty.18 Between 1871 and 1881, Thomas and Sarah had four more children: Charles Henry in 1873, Sarah in 1875, Henry between 1874-1877, and Emily in 1879. Sarah died at age 8 months, and was buried at St. Mary’s Church in Battersea on 17 Apr 1876.19 The address on her burial record was 2 Canterbury Road, which was the family’s address in the 1881 England Census, which shows Thomas Ward, a general labourer, and Sarah with their six living children: Thomas James, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Charles, Henry, and Emily.20

In a recent system update, the website of the General Register Office of the UK has added a module to search its indexes. The biggest improvement is the addition of the mother’s previous surname in the birth indexes for all years. Before this information was only available on index entries after 1911. I checked the index for children that could be Thomas James and Sarah’s, which are listed below.21

‡ Unsure if this is Thomas and Sarah’s son, no surname listed in index for mother

The very first baptism record I can find for one of Thomas James and Sarah’s children is for their daughter Emily Ward on 9 Dec 1879 at St. John’s Church in Battersea.24 Alfred John Ward, my great-grandfather, was also baptized at St. John’s, Battersea on 24 Jul 1883.25 Between 1879 and 1883, Thomas and Sarah moved the family to Weston Street near Usk Road in Battersea. Alfred Ward’s birth certificate lists the family’s address as 11 Weston Street. Thomas James was now working as a builder’s labourer.26

Weston Street is another road that no longer exists. It was demolished in the 1930’s. At this time, Weston Street (later called Didcot Street) and its neighbor St. Peter’s Place were described as “two dense cul-de-sac” that were “slum-like dead ends.”27 The former location of Weston Street is visible on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map below,28 next to photos of this location from our visit. Weston Street backed up to the Infirmary for the Wandsworth and Clapham Union.29
The Ward family did not live long at Weston Street. Rosina Ward, born in 1886, was baptized at St. Anne’s Church in Wandsworth on 24 May 1887 with an address of Lydden Grove.30 The same day, Thomas James, the son of Thomas James Ward Jr. and his future wife Annie Scrivener, was baptized.31 Thomas James Jr. and Annie were living on Wardley Street just around the corner. Both can be seen on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map for Earlsfield below.32 Lydden Grove was in the neighborhood adjacent to the Wandsworth & Clapham Union Workhouse. The wall, pictured below, is the only part of the Workhouse that remains today.

Thomas James and Sarah’s twelfth and final child, George William Ward, was born on 20 Jan 1889.33 He was baptized at Holy Trinity Church in Upper Tooting, while the family was living at 85 Graveney Road in Tooting.34

The family moved yet again and by the time of the 1891 Census, they were living around the corner from Graveney Road at 10 Fountain Road in Tooting.35 The Ward family lived in recently built row houses in this neighborhood, which was on the outskirts of Wandsworth, near Mitcham. Neighbors on either side were hawkers living in Gypsy tents. Although the Wards would switch houses several more times, many descendants of Thomas James and Sarah remained on and near Fountain Road for several more decades. Thomas James Ward died on 28 Jul 1892, at 6 Alston Road in Tooting.36 His cause of death was “phthisis,” a term for a handful of conditions of consumptive nature, most commonly pulmonary tuberculosis.

After Thomas James Ward’s death in 1892, Sarah Ward moved her children across the street from their former home at 10 Fountain Road to No. 17a Fountain Road, where she is listed in the Electoral Register for 1895.38 Their son Alfred Ward’s School Admission and Discharge Record for that year also gives his address as 17a Fountain Road.39 While the family was living here, a tragic murder-suicide resulted in the demise of an entire family at No. 8 Fountain Road. An out-of-work plasterer by the name of Frank Taylor slit the throats of his wife and seven children with a razor. Fourteen year-old Frank Taylor Jr. survived, and ran to the neighbors for help.40

By the time of the 1901 Census, Sarah Ward had moved her family to the other side of St. George’s Infectious Disease Hospital to 25 Maybury Street, Tooting.41 Sarah was working as a general laundress, and was living with her children Henry, Alfred, Rosina, John, and George. Ten years later in the 1911 Census, Sarah Ward was living back on Fountain Road (No. 125), boarding with her daughter Rosina, her husband William Sears, and their children William, Rosina, Alfred, Albert, and Frederick Sears.42
Sarah died on 22 Mar 1928 at the age of 85. She died at the Hospital at St. John’s Hill, Battersea, but had been living at No. 4 Fountain Road in Tooting prior to her death.43

Thomas James Ward and Sarah Hannah Lucy Courtneidge have many living descendants today by ten of their twelve children. They had 65 grandchildren between 1886 and 1924. Sixty-four were born in Surrey or London in England, and one was born in Michigan in the United States of America. Their first grandchild, Thomas James Ward (son of Thomas James Ward and Annie Scrivener) was born on 21 Mar 1886. Their youngest grandchild, Arthur Reginald Sears (son of Rosina Ward and William Ernest Sears) was born on 5 July 1924.
